skip to content anything but bland life is a story. how do you want to write yours? menu about recent posts the three types of love i like coffee shops busyness killed the bunny the morning started like most others. me waking up to an alarm at 6:25 that i had naively set the night before, thinking i’d actually get out of bed early for once to make a smoothie. i had deceived myself for the hundredth time. the snooze button on my phone felt the wrath of my incessant tapping as i proceeded to silence each subsequent alarm until 6:50. then the real flurry begins. i tear apart my closet to find a clean pair of dress pants, throw on a turtleneck, make sure my hair will suffice without a wash for another day, and grab some yogurt and granola bars from the fridge. i take my tooth brush to-go, knowing i’ll have to brush in the bathroom sink at work. it’s sad, really. i can remember growing up and as a 12-year-old having to be responsible not only to get myself ready in the morning, but another human being as well. i had to feed my little sister, and feed myself, put lunch in her backpack, put lunch in my backpack, braid her hair, braid my hair, and get us out the door on time. i didn’t have a choice, i’ve always done what’s demanded of me. i’m at a stage in life where 12-year-old kendra literally had her life more in order than 20 year-old kendra. it’s not that i’m lazier now than i was back then, busyness has just slowly crept closer since then and backed me into a corner. into a place where i need an extra 25 minutes to lie in bed before having to face the world, or i might not get through the day. i put on my worn-out, lace-up aldo boots, and shut the front door behind me. i leave the house at 7:01 am. it smelled like rain that morning, yet small white flakes filled the expanse between the sky and the frozen ground. i hear a soft whimpering as i approach the house across the street from me. the sound reminds me of when my niece quietly whines when my mom says she can’t have any more chocolate chips because we need them to make cookies. as i get closer i can see something lying on the snow in the middle of my neighbor’s yard. it’s a bunny. she’s looking at me, i know she is. it’s as if she’s asking if i can put aside my busy day for a minute and help her. and for a moment, i considered it. but the world was still asleep. it would take at least three and a half minutes to go knock on a door, explain about the hurt bunny, and then continue my eight minute walk to the bus stop. i couldn’t afford to spare three and a half minutes. i truly wanted to stop, but i could’t. i may be disorganized and only slightly frazzled on the best of days, but i am still dependable. i simply have no wiggle space in my life to allow for disturbances. i have things to do and people to see, business overviews to write, brochures to edit, meetings to book, emails to answer, notes to study, groceries to buy. so i left the bunny there. that night after work i trudged to the library where i studied until i could study no more. it was only when i was walking home at quarter to 12 that night and turning the last corner, that i remembered the bunny. and sure enough there was the bunny still lying in the same spot, only now there was a layer of snow covering her, and no one would know she was there but for a patch of fur sticking up through the snow. anyone who knows me can attest that i am not an animal-lover in the least. but that night i stood across the lawn from that bunny and wept. i wept for this small animal that could have been helped had i taken a few minutes out of my day, and i wept for the person i’ve become. sometimes the fear creeps in that my life will always be this way. that busyness is simply an aspect of our culture now and i’ll never have the time to enjoy the little things, to make change in a world that desperately needs changing. most days i succeed in shoving that fear down. there isn’t really a point to this post. maybe it’s a call for help that something needs to change, that i don’t want to live another 60 years like this. maybe i just want to have time to do more of the things that really matter; like asking someone how their day is and really taking the time to listen, hanging out with some cute kids every once in awhile, sitting with god for the pure joy of wanting to soak in his presence, or even having the time to unexpectedly save a bunny. i remain hopeful that one day i will live the kind of life where i’m not too busy to help a dying bunny. i remain hopeful that one day when i meet an old friend and they ask me how i am, my first response can be ‘well thanks’, and not ‘busy’. but how many more bunnies have to die before that day comes? all i can do is hope that “one day” will come soon. -kendra author kendra posted on april 13, 2018 april 13, 2018 7 comments on busyness killed the bunny the three types of love our world does not understand love. and what do we expect? how can we understand something unless we have first experienced it for ourselves? a child does not understand the importance of sharing, until they realize how they are impacted when someone shares something with them. we can’t expect a child to exemplify something they have not first experienced and then understood for themselves. you can tell a child to share, and discipline them if they don’t. they will realize in time that they must share because their parents tell them to, and if they don’t they’ll be punished. but do they really understand what it means to share in that scenario? we can say, “christians should love people more!” and we can preach sermons on it, and scare people by saying that if we don’t love people then then we must not love god. but if we are only trying to love others because we see it as something we have to do, just like the child who shares out of a need to simply do what they are told, we are missing the reason as to why we are called to love in the first place. there are three types of love i have experienced. the first is to love someone and also receive love in return. this is the easiest type of love. the type that jesus said even the pagans have for one another. it’s the type of love that comes naturally. this love can look different depending on the relationship. it can be that friend that’s always quick to drive you where you need to go, will give you a pep talk after a bad midterm, and is always there when you need someone to hang with on a friday night. or it can be that guy or girl that you want to spend every day with, that just sitting beside them and seeing them smile brightens your day because all you want is for them to happy. this type of love is not necessarily a bad love, or a shallow love. but it is an easy love. and if we stay at this level of loving people, we never understand what it really means to love people by giving of ourselves. the second is to love someone even when you get nothing in return. whenever i think of this type of love, i like to think of my roommate and my relationship. i can come home having had a miserable day, and get upset over who loaded and unloaded the dishwasher, and she will still hug me and listen to me cry and assure me that jesus has not given up on me. she does not get anything in return for doing this. she is simply being there for me because she loves me. she is not doing it in hopes that she’ll get a favor in return. she chooses to love me, while getting nothing out of it. this type of love does not keep track of how many coffees you bought for your friend, hoping they’ll buy that same amount for you again some other time. it’s loving someone simply because someone needs it. because you know people have loved you when you had nothing to offer them, and you want to love another like that as well. some may think that this is the highest level of love, but they are mistaken. the third is to love someone by dying to self. this is choosing to speak highly of someone, even when they wronged you. this is the
